San Juanico Bridge
Tacloban, Leyte
August 27, 2014

The San Juanico Bridge connecting Leyte and Samar is 2.16 kilometers in length. It was built during the President Marcos’ time to connect islands and for economic purposes. It is such a beautiful bridge not becasue of its modernity in structure; it is just a bridge built using steel and concrete but what makes it so beautiful is, it is built in between two gorgeous islands and with breathtaking scenery of islands and the sea. This is a Southeast Asian landmark and monument of time, tested by the greatest storm in the entire universe. There is no stronger bridge than that in the whole world.

I walked the span of this bridge from Leyte to Samar to feel the wind and pride of crossing to another island. On the bridge, I felt the sense of pride, awe, comfort, and then sadness, remembering what happened to Tacloban and the whole area during the storm Haiyan. We were there, responding to the needs of the people, after three weeks. Coming back was a relief seeing people moving on and getting back on their feet.
